Reznor on Radiohead and inept industry

View Comments (0)

Still strong financially (if not stronger) from his recent "Ghosts I-IV" release, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor discussed the current state of modern music distribution in an interview with Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Michael Atkin.

In the interview, Reznor questions Radiohead's approach for the distribution of their latest album, "In Rainbows," implying they should have offered higher mp3 quality and include artwork with the release.

"I think the way [Radiohead] parlayed it into a marketing gimmick has certainly been shrewd, but if you look at what they did, though, it was very much a bait and switch to get you to pay for a MySpace-quality stream as a way to promote a very traditional record sale. There's nothing wrong with that, but I don't see that as a big revolution they're kinda getting credit for. To me that feels insincere. It relies upon the fact that it was quote-unquote 'first,' and it takes the headlines with it."

Questioned on whether the industry might be influenced by the success recent releases had on the Internet, Reznor answered :

"The level of ineptitude I've seen at the major labels is stunning. The people in charge of a lot of the digital technologies and the aspects that are decimating their business that I've seen are people that seem to not even be on the Internet."

Ghostly numbers

Sales performance surrounding Nine Inch Nail's impressive "Ghosts I-IV" album are starting to leak over the inter webs.

Apparently, he sold 2,500 copies of the deluxe package alone which has a price point of 300$ a piece. Reznor surely is happier with his album's performance compared to the relative disappointment surrounding his collaboration with Saul Williams.

First freely shared NIN album set

Nine Inch Nails is the next big one to distribute their new album as free downloadable content.  The band has just released the first volume of their new album “Ghosts” on BitTorrent sites as a free download. The band encourages its fans to share the album with friends, post it on websites and play it on podcasts, TorrentFreak reports.

Frontman Trent Reznor describes the project in the release notes of the official "Ghosts" website, where is it completely available through streams :

This music arrived unexpectedly as the result of an experiment. The rules were as follows: 10 weeks, no clear agenda, no overthinking, everything driven by impulse. Whatever happens during that time gets released as... something.

We began improvising and let the music decide the direction. Eyes were closed, hands played instruments and it began. Within a matter of days it became clear we were on to something, and a lot of material began appearing. What we thought could be a five song EP became much more. I invited some friends over to join in and we all enjoyed the process of collaborating on this.

The end result is a wildly varied body of music that we're able to present to the world in ways the confines of a major record label would never have allowed - from a 100% DRM-free, high-quality download, to the most luxurious physical package we've ever created.

You can get the first volume for free on the website, download volumes 1 through 4 for 5$ or even get the four volumes on a 2 CD set for a mere 10$.

I have to warn you that the site in being pounded by everyone at the moment and has loading issues. The .Zip file of the free volume 1release I downloaded was corrupted. However, “Ghosts” being released under a non-commercial Creative Commons license you can find it in the Internet's shady places. You know what to do (at least for the first volume).

Nine Inch Nails have split with their record label Interscope.  The following statement was made on the band's website.

Hello everyone. I've waited a LONG time to be able to make the following announcement: as of right now Nine Inch Nails is a totally free agent, free of any recording contract with any label. I have been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate. Look for some announcements in the near future regarding 2008. Exciting times, indeed.

Interscope will be releasing "Y34RZ3R0R3MIX3D", a remix album of Year Zero, on November 20th.
