Stranger Than Fiction

Stranger Than Fiction Week #4

Armed only with a bag of Oreos and a bottle of water, I undertake the task of writing yet another Stranger Than Fiction.

I had a crazy weekend. UFC 81 was good. I’m probably alone here, again. Had to babysit a couple of people who drank far too much Saturday night but it’s all good. Also, I have some advice for the lightweight drinkers out there: avoid the tequila.

A STORY OF DIMEBAG AND SAUSAGE

Pulled from Blabbermouth:

DIMEBAG Girlfriend’s Favorite ‘Sausage’ Memory

When asked for her favorite memory of her time with Darrell, Haney said, “Darrell didn’t sleep well at night, but he’d nod out while he was watching TV. He loved to watch forensics. The second he’d go to sleep, I’d steal the remote and switch it over to something that I wanted to watch, and I’d be real quiet so I didn’t wake him. One time we were sitting together on the couch and I had to fart. I didn’t want to get up because it would wake him up, so I just let it slide out. After I did, I was going, ‘Oh, my God! This smells so awful!’ and I was trying to keep from laughing. About that time, he started to stir, and he said, ‘Are you cooking something? I smell sausage.’ And he went back to sleep. I started laughing and then he completely woke up and said, ‘Goddamn it! You farted, didn’t you?’ I told him I was sorry, but I couldn’t stop laughing. Every time I think about ‘Are you cooking? I smell sausage,’ I have to laugh. I have a lot of good memories of him, but that one is about as candid as it gets.”

I thought that was fairly amusing and article worthy.

U2 IS AFTER YOUR INTERNET!

From Music-News.com:

Paul McGuinness, manager of rock band U2, has called on Internet service providers to immediately start disconnecting users who download music, and urged the world governments to inforce it. In a speech delivered Monday during the International Managers Summit at the MIDEM music conference, McGuinness said it was time for artists to stand up against “shoddy, careless and downright dishonest way they have been treated in the digital age.”

He went on to blame record labels that “through lack of foresight and planning allowed a range of industries to arise that let people steal music”; Silicon Valley companies that create marvelous devices but “don’t think of themselves as makers of burglary kits”; and finally the Government who he said “created a thieves’ charter” by agreeing that ISPs should not be responsible for what passes along their pipes.

Decrying ISPs that hold up their hands in innocence when music is downloaded via their systems, he offered a comparison: “If you were a magazine advertising stolen cars, handling the money for stolen cars and seeing to the delivery of stolen cars, the police would soon be at your door,” he said. “That’s no different to an ISP, but they say they can’t do anything about it. If you steal a laptop from a store or don’t pay for your broadband service, you’ll soon be cut off and nicked.”

Have fun with trying to get that off the group Mister McGuinness. I also ask you this: does U2 really need more money?

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE NEWS I REALLY SHOULD HAVE PUT ON THE MAIN PAGE, BUT FORGOT

Again from Music-News.com:

Melbourne’s “Big Day Out” ended in chaos on Monday night when fans of Rage Against The Machine turned violent in their bid to get to the front of the stage. The annual event was marked by the crowd unrest, which saw one man knocked unconscious and another fall from a marquee as the 45,000-strong audience pushed forward to see Rage in the finale.

Rage was later rushed off the stage by show organisers, who threatened to cut short the band’s set altogether unless fans stopped the violence.

From fake press releases to flag bans to this. Awesome. I only hope that I may one day attend the festival known as “Big Day Out”.

QTRAX HELL

Last STF I wrote about Qtrax. Don’t know what that is? Hit up the archives, fool, and read up on it. I kept a log of what happened and for your viewing pleasure, here it is.

Sunday, January 27th

I stayed up until midnight waiting for the beta release but noticed that it didn’t come out until the following night.

Tuesday, January 29

At 4:49 am, I had remembered I was suppose to download the beta for Qtrax. Upon clicking the download link, it would not work. At 2:21 pm, a SomethingAwful Goon made me aware that things looked bleak for Qtrax. Shortly after, I was able to download the beta.

Wednesday, January 30

At 2:56 I returned from the bar and insomnia set in. Great time to see how Qtrax works! Upon installing, the program asked me if I wanted to scan my library for music. Seeing how I understand the four major record labels have a hand in the program, I opted out of that. Registration was a nightmare. Personal information is required to register, but the program wouldn’t register Canadian postal codes. I had to invent a US Postal code in order to proceed. Once that was done, I began to browse for my free songs! Except, there were none. I got a pop up dictating that there are merely placeholder results at this point that have no actual data.

Later on that day, shortly after 10:00 pm, the search function stopped working. I e-mailed their technical support and gave up for the day.

Thursday, Janurary 31

I received no support e-mail from the support team. My SA Goon informed me that the labels had backed out of said project and that Sony was the only possibly left behind.

At this point, I’m starting to think Qtrax is a lost cause. I’ll keep looking into it, but I doubt much else will happen from here.

BEST OF THE WORST

And finally, it would appear Britney Spears will finally be look after now that her father has been named her conservator and is in charge of her liquid assets.

More next week, news permitting! Folks, sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
